midle aged suburban and cognitively substandard

(originally posted from the buss, but aparently i lost connection and it wasn’t published)

I’m on the clark st. buss heading north, just entering edgewater. a woman just asked me when we get to wrigley field, which we passed some time ago. The funny thing is, she was on the buss when i got on at belmont, and her seat faced the field when we passed it at addison. she and her husband just got off to wait for the southbound buss, but first they asked me if it was a safe neighborhood to wait for the buss in. they’re from schaumberg, of course….

Neue Kaberet show:

Dante and Voodoo Caberet and Ms. Betsy Chainsaw performing at Subterreanean Saturday, Nov 30th at 10 pm Tickets only $10 Subterreanean is located at 2011 w north. you’ve thrilled to dante’s fan dances at De Corps’ shows, you’ve chilled to Ms. Betsy’s antenae whipping of vito and her and Dawn’s Firedance opener, now see them in Neue Kaberet, along with a host of other weimeresque performers…more at divadykes (thanks to the woodman for the pointer)

Economy provides this link for your enjoyment. first page of the article sums up what i feel about mcafee to a tee. (thanks Jeff)

i’m featured on MacNetJournel today. ok, actually, yesterday, but i didn’t read it yesterday, and it’s still on the mainpage. and i forgot to mention that the pliers are missing along with the eithernet cable. And i really shouldn’t have mailed it from the cellphone, my lack of spelling and punctuation look even more immature when framed by proper articles.

more things to be thankful about: more GET YOUR WAR ON! for those of you who don’t know GYWO is a funny little preaching to the converted/historically knowledgible cartoon done with stock cartoon images. you can gather from it’s title it’s a pomo take on shrub’s drive for reelection, er, war on terrorism and or iraq. try some you’ll like it.

list of banned toys. most boomers will remember these fondly. i spent years trying to get my mother to let me get some of these when i was a preteen, just because they were dangerous. my next door neighbor in white plains used clackers better then most tv shows use nunchucks: she had to hide them from her mother, i’d add real whammo superballs to the list, even a wuss like me could get them to bounce higher then a two flat, which is how we always lost them, and the whammo crossbow, along with the toystore daisey airguns. who could forget the crossman 760 powermaster? i stupidly traded mine for 40 sf novels in high school. lawn darts…the mattel secret agent airzooka that generated over 120db of sound pressure…the huge metal caltrops the girls used as jacks…it’s all coming bak to me now…

those of you who are about to shop, we salute you. just don’t tell us about it.

why pay for the phone if you ain’t gonna use it?

now dean wants one.

for a lyrical treat, under MORE you’ll find some old ian drury and the blockheads lyrics…to which i’d add rechargable camera batteries, large laptop hard drives, imics and cables, eric meyer on css, and bunch of other things from the wishlist, thanks to Ben! chanukah came early this year, for sure!

as always, read Daniel’s thanksgiving message. he’s so much wiser then i.

i’m not feeling all that fucking uplifting right now.

sign for the next pigroast.

steal this book online.

oh yeah, i forgot…

HAPPY FUCKING TURKEY DAY!

turkey of a day

HAPPY TURKEY DAY!

[and despite the murderous depression, i'm thankfull. life is always better then the alternative, and friends are better then enemas. or shooting wars. or enemies. this was mylate grandfather's favorite holiday, he considered it an americanism of the feast of tabernacles. and he was genuinely greatfull for living and living here. and me and my siblings, oddly enough. (the only reason i'm glad he's gone is he didn't live to see what wretches we turned out to be) his last year every holiday turned into thanksgiving-he was singing just before his heart attacked him. me, i'm thankfull for the few friends i have. i might not always understand them, i certainly don't agree with most of them, i could kill half of them on friday, and their all crazy (hell, they must be crazy if they like me, i wouldn't be my friend if i met me in a cafe.)(hell, i wouldn't be friend no matter where i met me.) so here's to good friends, good food, children underfoot, and bad tv specials. A Very Happy Thanksgiving To all]

(i’m especially thankfull for this link, from Ben)

Pictures of Young Robert Castle playing at dugans last saterday. can be found here.

here’s Richie bringing in the brussels sprouts for manana. Ben said it would make good blog fodder. he’s right. much better then all the pix i’ve taken this week of his dad’s cat’s ass.

Ben is off having dinner with Karla, I’m in the house of the rising Stoltz (the land of the giants?), amid the flurry of preparations. (it’s not safe to walk around here barefoot, that’s for certain) JoAnn’s brother passed away this week, and Anson has pneumonia so they aren’t coming. i assume Anson’s brood won’t be here as well. Cameron has chosen to not miss his half sisters bat mitzva, so another no show (and a wonderfull example of the difference between jews and sears jews: jews don’t have bat mitzvahs.) And no Brugman’s. poor little Stoltz Castle clan, they’re stuck with me again this year. how i pity them….they deserve better.

(update: mary politly (0) asked to sleep elsewhere. so i’m in edgewater)

the iBook took a few hits from Richie today, but hasn’t failed since i re did the tape under the keys yesterday. which is good. this machine is the only thing that stands between me and madness.

sad isn’t it?

well, enjoy your holiday, and drive/travel safely. unless you want to look like my father’s car. (special to unger: yes, it was a camry, and no, i don’t think he hit another camry) and please remember to give the gift of cd or dvd burners this year. it’s the gift that keeps on ripping!

(and tell your friends about ffejworld, the petty vindicative website that wants everyone to feel it’s pain.)

(now time to put the cable back in ben’s phone and go downstairs and eat)

more phone trouble. can’t get carrier to post, but otherwise works well. Saterday night we went and saw Bob Castle’s band play at Duggan’s. 50’s rock, played well, and in vintage clothing. First time I’ve seen Bob play in a band. My ears rang. I will be haunted by the sight odf Bob in a DA for the res of my life ;-)

Last night Ben and I tore my laptop apart and put in a new hard drive. Worse then working on an early 90’s auto focus camera. Total fear facter. I destroyed a flex connecter lock, and Ben dumped the screws all over the floor. We sended up with one extra screw and shiming the connecter with tape. And we’re pros…only took 6 hours. It took ben 2 hours for his…

Ben also assures me that Maureen reads this mess; since the dean/women/crazy post i’ve heard from more women then the dudes who post.

ouch. some observations on being

ouch.

some observations on being nearly paperless. it’ s been over ayear since i lost all my books, and about four months since i was able to walk across the street and read the paper for free. so i’ve been trying to get all my news online, through the cellphone and borrowed bandwidth when i can get it (THANKS KENNETH!) i’ve noticed a few things. if i’m borrowing bandwidth, i tend to open more browsers (or browser tabs) then i read, download shitloads of PDF and other documents, trying to maximize the bandwidth and read it it later. which i don’t, well, 30% of what i grab goes unread. borrowed computers used for news aquisition give me eyestrain–budget monitors are cheap for a reason. winXP is ugly, and renders weird. trying to read seriously on the cellphone is murder. all of this coupled with my agiing eyes loosing their abilityto close close focushas made reading a chore, and my retention is slipping. having to read at terminal or in public instead of lying on a couch or bed has made it work. horrers.

as an aside stuff downloaded to a winPC can be a pain to move to a mac. a few years ago almost all pc’s were shipping with zip drives, that gave way as prices dropped. the iBook hasn’t any floppy drive, the wintel standard (which only hold about a meg anyway, try moving a website by floppy sometime.) i stopped carrying the zip drive since no one has a zip and there are problems with mine writing/reading windows formatted 100m disks (mine is an early 250, iomega is aware of the problem, and says it’s apples fault, and they [iomega] won’t write a better driver to replace the apple driver–one more reason they won’t be around next year.) pc’s with cd burners or wireless are easy to grab data from. last night i was able to give kenneth 64m of pictures that would have taken an hours to write to

100m zip in 15 minutes via wireless. if i had had had a blank cd, it would have taken almost no time though.

sunspots swamp gas or more tightening in the van allen belt

today the phone worked well. well it worked. well it worked when i called people. i didn’t get a single incoming call. oh well. people probably burned out about. dean is finishing day five of his enforced bedrest for back pain-incrediably reminiscent of ben and i visiting him in the hospital almost ten years ago thanksgiving…he wriths better then any actor playing a possesed character in a movie. wish i had gotten some of it on tape. sharon insisted i give him a sponge bath, and that drove him out of bed. well, askiing him for the location of the brillo and blowtorch did it.

props to danny for better pilsen coverage then me. the best lines without a doubt: “The suit, in turn, has caused an uproar on local yachting Internet bulletin boards, mostly from those upset with what they say is Podmajersky’s “unsportsmanlike” behavior in going to court to force the yacht club to change it’s ruling.

But Podmajersky says he is fighting for a “matter of principle.”

“I want everybody to understand that this is not about me, this is not about my ego,” he said.”

reading more on the homeland security bill and the resulant database nation is making me sick.

this beats all: sale prices are now copyright protected

assholes. please boycott all the listed merchandizers.

eh spoke too soon

spoke too soon. phone still f’ing up. getting nothing but noise and static when calling oobleo0, can get through to heidi. managed to get through to paul, but only after 4 hours of “all circuits are busy.” i don’t get it. if i hadn’t sat around lamprey and listened to everyone complain about their phones i’d think it was just the phone. (actually, kenneth’s phone is f’ck’d…)

bob castle is playing friday at duggan’s on halsted in greektown-hey bob, how about posting some info? (and howzabout a comp?) jake labotz is making a rare chicago apearance, with three pay what you can shows, one at chela joes for sunday brunce, and one saterday night at eric and sandy’s loverly home…so great music this weekend.

phone seems

the phone seems restored. after 4 days of sunspots, or whatever. our man flint and the presidents analist are no more, RIP. dawn wrecked her bike, but is mostly unhurt. dean wrecked his back, and has taken off work. jemnn the cabbie has been beatified. i downloaded the opera seven beta for windows for deans machine, and the ads are all in german…

phomie pholiies

damn phone is still not working. gonna move and see if it’s an antennae/reception problem
