best of crimes, worst of crimes

best movies: almost every movie i saw this year was at least a year old, even the three i saw in theaters. so the best movie of 2003 was Knocking on Heaven’s Door: The Cowboy Bebop Movie, orginally released in either 2001 or 2002, depending on which site you check. the brutal story of a guy who was used as a nanotechnology test case by the military, who escapes and becomes a mass murdering terrorist, and the usual gang of misfit bounty hunters who hunt him. stars the characters from the anime series, takes place just before and isn’t quite as good as the last epsiode of the series, but a better setup for it then it got in the series. as usual Spike survives more damage then humanly possible, plot holes yu can drive a truck through, and an almost complete waste of Faye. go see it anyway.

the only exception to the above was The MatriX ReGurgitated. which blew. i didn’t see The MatriX RessusitationZ, but reliable sources told me it died.

best music: i stopped listening to the radio regulary last year. the only new music i heard this year that l liked was from teh soundtrack to Kill Bill, but then i’m a sucker for the Green Hornet Theme, and the Animal’s “Don’t let me be misunderstood.”

best script: Kill Bill. still haven’t seen the movie. a film geeks compendium of grindhouse and chop socky references. homage a clef? should be a word…

best shareware: NetNewsWire, the RSS aggregator.

best DVD: tie between LOTR: The Two Towers extended version and Adaptation.

best blog: BoingBoing. news, art, technology.

best news of the year: None.

best new gadget: Tapwave’s Zodiac. PAlm OS based PDA with better graphics then most home computers…

best new computer: tie between the double deuce G5 and the second rev 12″ powerbook.

worst movie: the cat in the hat. mike meyers, the director and producer should be sterilized, blinded, subjected to electroshock and have their arms put into food processors upto the elbow.

worst music: tie between all the rap and shrieky female idol crap i’m subjected to in public and all the “alternative” shit i have to hear in private.

worst news of the year: all.

worst american “election:” the california recall.

worst software: M$ Office.

worst thing i heard on the bus: Paris Hilton down on the farm.

worst thing i saw on TV: Tech TV. it’s like 24 hours of Popular Mechanix from 1975. a week after the first test flight of Space Ship One, they were still calling it untested and unlikely to be tested this year…

second worst thing i saw on TV: I Love The Seventies.

third worst thing on TV: POKER.

worst DVD of the year: brotherhood of the wolf.

hairball and miss nastaly are due in any minute.

mamiya’s web site blows. pages mention data that isn’t linked to, no customer serice link, no real info, just a bad arty layout and coupons. the only good point of the entire site is their use of the word “snailmail.” i guess they don’t have to try very hard, with epson making them all their money these days. i ended up using google to search for links to the info i wanted in old forums, then the Wayback Machine to call up 6 year old pages of theirs, get the PDF file names i needed, and plug those names back into google to get the actual files–which are still online, just not connected to any of their pages. idiots. hour or so of work, but i got 6 MF and & MF user manuals for Ned. mamiya has just lost the FFEJ seal of aproval. dunno which medium format will replace them.

happy hollow days

i’ve gotten a few more requests for light fluffy pieces, a few more requests for vito bashing tirades. to try to be polite, no.

this is my page. i’m an unemployed homeless person. i get to do what i want with it. this page and the little stuff i have stashed across the north side of chicago is all i have. everything, my whole life. the fact that a virtual space encompasses so much of it rankles me at times (but not the way you’d think). but it’s mine, by the grace of Ben Stoltz who provides the machine and bandwidth this site runs on, and the will of MovableType the content management system i use to publish it (thank you Ben, thank you Ben and Mena Trott). that’s only the tip of the iceberg, actually, since MovableType runs on Perl, and Perl runs in this case on Linux. that’s a huge cast of thousands of volunteers. for the most part unpaid volunteers. then there’s the RSS and Atom components of the site, the free versions of the news aggregators like NetNewsWire Lite or Amphetadesk that use those components, the Kung-Log donationware editor i post from, the Html and XML standards you use when you view it, the Mozilla and Konquerer team who make your browsers, and finally the TCP/IP protocol upon which the Web and the Internet are built. a massive huge unpaid team of volunteers keeping one virtual space alive for one homeless person. it rankles me i have nothing to give back, nothing to offer them other then input and bug reports. i would like someday to be able to give back some real software, make some little contribution. in the meantime i’m a user and an advocate. but it’s still my page. and i’ll still do what i want with it, since it’s primary purpose is to amuse me by educating you, and pissing off the powers that be. this pages only failure is that it isn’t good enough, it doesn’t do a good enough job, i don’t do a good enough job of showing there is more then one way to use a computer, more then one company in the bizniz, more then one narrow minded way to misuse the planet and more then one planet for use to live on.

so in between your griping about rising CTA fares and not getting the present you wanted, think about the hoards of volunteers who make this all possible, and think about the other paths to take, as well as thinking about sending me some dough through paypal at parody66 at yahoo dot com. there are places for you to donate to to support open source projects, as well as shareware versions of the freeware to buy, and even organizations who help the less fortunate then me get computers who take old machines for donation. it doesn’t take much. and if you give a little, you might get a nifty little screed in return. maybe. if i feel like it. or the cats act up again. who knows. stranger things have been known to happen.

like the internet. or the PC revolution, which seems so mundane know, but was such a Big Deal. or cell phones. because all of this, and even my little page, gives you a voice, a virtual printing press, and a means of distribution that was denied you for centuries. even a degenerate pig fondler like Oakey is read by over 2000 people a month (2361 unique visitors as of this post, 24 thousand hits, almost 500 more visits then this time last month, 4 thousand more hits). Oakey knows this, and has had his arm twisted into donating to the Cause, which gives him a voice. but you get more then a voice, you get the content you’ve been denied by the normal distribution channels, the ones that consider you a mindless consumer, an automatic jack or jill in their power trip mill and gasoline to be burned in the engine of commerce. if jerry got off his ass and got a computer, he could get finally get WZRD at home, because Eric is making it stream over the net. Natalie gets her weird EuroTrash net stations, and others share their cd collections. the value is here on the edge, where volunteers and pigfondlers and even homeless people matter.

in a lot of ways this is the golden age…

so drop a tenspot on me, or mac net journal macosxhints or macintouch, buy something from think geek to support slashdot, or just click on a few ads on your website of choice. or buy some shareware. you’ll be able to tell your grandkids or niecephews that you were truely part of it all, way back when. and what does all of this have to do with vito bashing? if you don’t like it, or wnat something else you can go read something else. or make your own vito bashing site.

for now at least…

cms news

we updated to MovableType 2.65, mostly a security update. we also added an Atom feed for FFEJWORLD, for those of you on the bleeding edge of news aggregation. (please post if your using Atom, and please post what aggregator you use) i re-discovered a bug in MovableType: when adding a new template, you have to save then use the rebuild link under the new template, not the one at teh top. the one at the top will error out with “can’t open file (whatever file the new template creates). this error occurs even if you make a dummie file with 777 permissions for the template to write to. i thought this had been fixed…

pimp and circumstance

did limbaugh doctor shop for pain pills? enquiring minds want to know. “Today’s finding came after lawyers for Mr. Limbaugh said his onetime housekeeper, who told Florida law enforcement authorities that she and her husband illegally supplied Mr. Limbaugh with prescription pain pills, was blackmailing him in return for their silence.” uh huh, right.

sco targets 3000 universities and companies who licensed UNIX with letters, while Novel reasserts it’s copyright claim to UNIX. The letter demands that licensees certify within 30 days that their employees and contractors haven’t taken any of eight specific actions involving Linux. If a licensee doesn’t provide the certification, “SCO may pursue all legal remedies available to it,” including termination of the license, the letter said.

“We expect this will also become an area of focus of our enforcement initiatives,” SCO Chief Executive Darl McBride said in a conference call Monday.

pot still illegal and criminal in canada. “Officials estimate 100,000 of the country’s 31 million people use pot daily and say 20,000 are convicted each year for using marijuana.” yup, which means in five years time they’ll all be in jail. (yes, i know, but i couldn’t resist. numbers like this really piss me off. one, canada population is roughly three times that of illinois 12 million, yet we had 43000 pot possesion arrests in 2002, and two, a National 2001/2002 Survey Estimates 37% of people 12 and older in the U.S. have tried marijuana in their lifetime. yes canada is a nicer cleaner place, but no, i’ts not that squeeky clean. methinks that they’re more then cooking the books, and methinks that they’re intentionally not counting native usage).

seasonal missgivings

i really hate cats.

they just won’t sit down and read, or sleep, or do anything amusing when you want them to. and i have wanted them to do anything but sing klingon opera and bite me all day.

norman likes me. this means opera, bites and now he’s figured out how to unroll the bedding and camp in my stuff. **shiver** he followed me into the shower yesterday…

bufus likes me too, more opera, and bufus knocks me over when he wants to be petted, and he jumps in my lap when i’m on the commode. know he’s licking me

and today earla decided she liked me, and she likes me bloody…at least she doesn’t sing klingon opera.

norman is unwinding my bedroll again…

lamprey this afternoon, 3pm.

solstice party at Neil and Chris’s tonight, call ‘em for details.

chicago magazine, who’s online version is still showing the september issue (and who only puts the index online anyway, so who gives a shit) (but we’ll hurt sales!) has picked Jerry’s nude photo booth project as the number one thing to do in town for January. we’re expecting an influx of fat suburban insurence salespeople, and northside barbers or whoever it is that actually buys the magazine. (actually as obleo reminded me, there were a bunch of people in last night who were vaguely elderly hippish and slightly leatherclad who may have been in for the project, on of them even winked and waved at me, but i couldn’t place her.)

there has been a request for more vito beating from the jesuspalooza crowd.

there is a wonderfull article on zappa.com that shows how Frank Zappa predicted commercial music download services, and thought this was a good thing. but i can’t link directly to the article, thanks to their content control mechanisms, which kind of defeats the purpose of a web page, to readily and easily share information…UPDATE: link found, courtesy of the Reel Jeff.
