One of the many, many, people who wrecked my life has passed away. my grandmother was still telling Paar’s stories in the 80’s. Jack Paar made me a fan of the totally insane Oscar Levant (screw the “neurotic” sobriquet you’ll see in all the obits, Levant was insane, and he said so–and acted it). not all my Paar memories are real, most were planted into my head by my grandmother and her friends in their stories. when Paar made a comeback in the 70’s, i couldn’t watch him–the great loony guests were gone. Without my real and implanted Paar memories i would have never tracked down all the Levant and Alexander King books. Goodbye, Mr. Paar, and may your grave be safe from tigers…
i’ve been offline for a while, and will be posting intermittently for the next couple of days. i’m having trouble posting from the cell phone, and have to raise some cash for survival. egular posting will resume sooner then later. we hope.
VLC has been updated to 0.7.0 it’s the multi-platform video streaming/viewing solution for OS X, windoze, and linux.
3ivx has been updated to 4.5.1. it’s the crossplatform solution for divx encoding, runs on Be, OS X, Linux, Amigados and elsewhere…

we broke 3272 unique users again, we had over 42000 hits, and once again M$ topped the list of users. since they never got back to my query about whether they’re a bot or a user, they get blocked. jerry came up second, followed by an ameritech dsl user, tom and beth, a chicago speakeasy customer, a comcast customer, and aol. both the hospitals fell out of the top ten. sequent made a comeback. the external search terms were topped by “fred holstein,” with 44 hits. followed by “malmedy massacre,” “halloween cliches,” “fuck sco,” dog/webresults.htm (huh?), web and the ever popular “17 powerbook review”. the internal search terms were “pawel,” “vito,” “kenneth,” “powermaster crossbow,” and “sexual abuse.”

M$ files for patents to prevent other programs from modifying Office files. he he he, lock in and lock out. If you don’t think that RFID tags are evil, or at least problematic, despite their being rammed down industry’s throat by walmart, M$ anounced new software for it could change your mind. all that info being gathered on your purchases would be only as secure as Windows…Gates, who is in london to shut down the british government’s move to open source, is set to get an honorary knighthood. He also announced that he’ll kill spam in 2 years–no doubt locking the rest of the world out of M$ email. Note that there’s a charge involved in his system. “In the long run, the monetary (method) will be dominant,” Microsoft’s chief software architect predicted.

The New York Times (free registration required) is reporting that a group of cellular telcos are quitely working on a massive integrated white pages of all cellular numbers. This is the first step to tele-marketers calling your cell phone. You pay for incoming calls in America so this would be very expensive. or generate millions in surcharges to keep your number private. “The complexities are formidable, but the payoff could be great: analysts say the mobile directory assistance business could yield $3 billion in revenue a year” Link to Dan Gilmor piece.
work proceeds at a rapid clip on ecto, the successor to kung-log. get version ecto version 0.2.2.0. fixes the loss of settings between uses, among others. shit, and thanks to Danny, i now know it integrates kung-tunes as well (see bottom). i’m going to miss it when it goes pay to play.
Cocktail has been updated to 3.4. it’s an able control panel for many hidden system settings that can only be controlled from the command line or by editing plists. only way i know of of removing the hidden .DS_Store files that OS X litters all over my compact flash cards.
