I’m stuck in the ass end of no where this weekend. Posts will be sporadic.
While the bulk of the Tiger reviews are going no farther then the Spotlight Search facility and the Dashboard widget facility, some sites are digging deeper.
Ars Technica review of Tiger. Very geeky, made me look like an idiot in IM with Ben. If Ars is right, OS X has foresworn it’s MACH heritage, and short of reading the kernel source, I no longer understand it’s underpinnings.
Daring Fireball’s feature/bug review–this will be updated all this week. And gruber is excepting submissions for the page. Lot’s of hidden goodness. Check his site for a special RSS feed for this page only and submission rules..
Macintouch has an updated in depth review, a list of incompatible applications, and list of updated applications.
These are warts and all reviews, not gosh wow reviews. Expect serious gripes and serious examination of the user interface and weird behaviour. Despite the Big Media campaign to get you to believe this is a minor system upgrade, it isn’t. The underpinnings have changed, the guts are new and some of the surface glitz has changed as well. While I can’t wait to get my hands on Tiger and kick the tires, you might do well to wait a while. Or you might find the one feature you absolutely must have now. It’s worth it for me just for the Dictionary (I kept a Quadra AV around for ages because it had this very same Dictionary (New Oxford American Dictionary and the Oxford American Writers Thesaurus). Discontinuous selections in Safari and TextEdit are another big point for me, and Automator)is icing on the cake. Bu tthen I’m more interested in teh changes in the guts then the glitz this time out.
…and gripes and flames. Tiger goes on sale Friday. Apple has it’s usual hype machine going, visit the 200+ New Features site. Remember, not all machines will be able to take advantage of all new features: this (much less then a year old) machine can’t do the multiple video conferencing. And not all feature have meaning for you. I don’t care bout nor do I want parental controls anywhere near my machine, nor do I want encrypted PDF files or iPhoto/Mail integration. But you wouldn’t know what to do with a RPN calculator (with 4 exceptions) or CLI HFS+ tools (which should have been there in the first place). And like Jaguar, this release is going to piss off a few third party deveopers, because Apple cloned or subsumed their product or it’s functionality.
I can’t wait.
Heard this last night on Sound Opinions: U2’s Bono sleeps at Bill Gates’ house when ever he’s in town.
One more reason not to listen to U2, If the Negativeland lawsuit wasn’t enough (especially in the face of their plunderphony and plundervideocy).
Alana has posted some photos from her recent trip to Thailand. See Alana with Thai toilets, Thai motorcycles, Thai food, Thai people, and Thai booz. And remember, it’s spelled “Alana” but it’s pronounced “Elayna.”
We went, we played we got a headache, we couldn’t breath, we left. The Terry Plumming Summit of 100 improvising musicians is going on till 7pm, with three more conductors yet to take the baton. If there is one. Contrary to the website, it’s in the basement of the Zhou Brother’s foundation building, and it’s not for the respiratory challanged: they’re sand blasting elsewhere in the building, and the silica hangs thick in the basement. Bring air protection. Don’t even think about bringing acoustic instruments if you want to heard.
I’m still sneezing up grit. I really need a shower.
For fans of that Urban country and western type music, Urban Djinn and the Urban Hog Wranglers are playing at Smoke Daddy on Thursday (28th) to celebrate. or something like that.
The Smoke Daddy is located at 1804 W. Division. 9pm till midnite.
This is so cool, a 24 buck rig to make wire clamps in any size. Of course like any wonder tools, it needs forty pages of instructions for use, but WTF, I needed this like 20 years ago, Jerry needs one NOW, and Kenneth probably needs 4.
24 buck version Here.
30-70 buck stainless versions here, along with instructions for use.
The Pilsen is Not For Sale campaign is having a ralley and press conference tonight at 6pm at 16th and Carpenter. Ald. Solis is apparently considering giving Lipe Properties a zoning change so they can stick more condos in the former Lerner Box building.
FFEJWORLD is participating in the Terry Plumming Summit of 100 improvising musicians manana. We will be preforming on Crumpelizer (plastic soda bottle) and possibly a saw blade. Maybe.

Nissa is running a marathon to raise funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Rather elegant way to run a fundraiser, take notes PERRO people.
