Opening February 1st!

Visions of Discord

A multimedia conflict art show at the Co-Prosperity Sphere

With art by Usama Alshaibi, Umberto Giangrandi, Jed McBride Meidam, Luis Fernando Rodriguez, Eddie Sato and Martin Schmidt

Friday February 1st
Time: 7-11pm

Gallery hours: 5-7pm Sunday through Thursday the 7th
3219 S Morgan Chicago, IL 60608

In a culture where the mediated spectacle of war is so commonplace it escapes consideration, this show presents artifacts of immediate experience. Indifferent to variations in historical time and geographical space, all political judgments suspended, only veterans, refugees and victims of humankind’s eternal horror are here brought together under one roof. They are your neighbors, for the most part, sharing personal perspectives on experiences no outsider could ever fully comprehend. Journalism and entertainment tell stories; these artworks challenge an exercise in empathy

Rule 240 still applies

Apparently the old CAB Rule 240 still applies:

Rule 240 — which states that in the event of any flight delay or cancellation caused by anything other than weather, the airline would fly me on the next available flight — not their next available flight.

Happy Birthday LEGO!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEN AND DEAN

Well, it’s either Ben’s birthday or it’s Dean’s. As most of you know, I wouldn’t know my own if it wasn’t printed on my ID. So happy birthday guys! Thanks for putting up with me for so long

Oh well

I’m continuously looking for a easier to use replacement for the 55 pound backpack. It’s major problems are short straps, a broken frame, and it’s being a partial clamshell opener (partial clamshells mix the worst features of top openers and clamshells, plus putting things in it or taking them out snag on the zippers). Now ideally I would get a Kifaru Navigator, the king of the panel loaders. No way i could afford one. Finally I found something I could possibly afford, a compromise. A top loader with a separate sleeping bag compartment and tons of PALS webbing to aid in organization. It’s on closeout, the site I found bought up the manufacturers remaining stock. That’s always a risk. You never know when the stock will dry up Last night i went to check the web page and discovered it was password protected. This doesn’t bode well for me or the company selling the pack. oh well…

ouch

So I’m talking to Fabian and I lean back in my chair and

WHAM!

I’m on the floor at a ninety degree angle to the one i was just facing while sitting up. And i’m flashing back to the scene in The 23 Stairs where I come to a rest mashed up against the wall on the short landing and remember my grandmother’s advice on clean underwear (BTW, still no word on if or when The 23 Stairs will be released on DVD-it does get replayed a lot on CBC After School PlayHouse as Elder Abuse, but they cut out almost all the really good partslike the Fennel Orgy and replace them with stock footage of kids beating old people and Farve getting sacked).

So I’m in a lot more pain then usual, and some of it is new. Plus some of it is pain I haven’t felt in almost 2 years. You know the old joke, no one notices their own feet until they start to hurt. Sucks to be me.

The end of the Gillmor Gang?

UPDATED: The Gang never went away, it now has a daily version, NewsGang Live, where norms and civilians can call in and listen or comment live,  in addition to the weekly Gang roundtable. You can now get the podcasts feed here and the new NewsGang news aggregator which will work on iPhone or other mobile browsers. I still think Jason’s behavior was craptacular.

So I just watched the Gillmor Gang’s current version, The Gang, self destruct. I think. What I actually saw was a series of Twits by Jason Calacanis.

MACWORLD keynote report: Apple screwing users again

Gosh thanks Apple. They’re charging $20 for operating system update on the iPod Touch, one that is free for iPhone users. And not a major release–it’s a move from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3. Even more annoying is it’s in part a security fix. So what’s to keep them from jacking you 20 bucks for the next update to the iPhone/iPod Touch software, the one due out in February? Or for the next OS X update? But hey, they’re also charging you for Time Capsule. For a a long time it was a feature of the then beta OS X Leopard. When Leopard shipped, the feature had been removed from Time Machine portion of OS X. Now it’s a hardware product!

I can’t keep making the joke about not getting kissed when you buy an Apple product. And I wonder how Jobs likes being described as filthy greedy pig. Not that the news from the street ever meet his his ears.

No matter how bad a day you are having

Someone will try to screw you.
