Pogo had it right

Walt Kelly, the author and artist reused this punchline over and over again. I remember always stoppingin a friend’s home, where his dad had the original art from another Pogo strip with the same punchline. It was true every time Walt used it, and it’s true now. Happy Earth Day (from Roger Ebert).

Lunar eclipse tonight/Tuesday for Chicago

The total lunar eclipse will begin approximately 12:33 am CST and will run through 4:01 am CST.

Totality will occur at 1:41 am CST and lasts 72 minutes.

NASA says 2:15 am CST will be the best time to view the eclipse, with best coloration.

Reminder lunar eclipses are safe to view, and can be spectacular if it isn’t cloudy. The moon will look all smokey and weird, and then seem to glow orange or red during totality.

Go plant a tree

I’ve planted a few trees in my life.
Most of them have been burned down.
Less then 8 of them are left.
Last night lightning killed this one that my brother and I planted over 30 years ago.
Between my back, my knee and my wallet I doubt I’m going to ever plant another tree. Which makes me very sad. Which makes this very, very hard to write.
You might want to consider planting some. Think about it the next time you go to the bathroom. Or the next time you breathe.

From my perch I’ve sometime seen…

The other night I saw a Hybrid taxi zipping around Pilsen. Actually saw it twice. So I started to pay attention to the make and models of the cabs, and discovered they aren’t all Crown Victorias. Neither are all the cop cars in Chicago. Some Impalas and Intrepids creeping into the fleets. Then I found an article in my newsreader about how the Crown Vic sales were tanking (fleet and consumer) and 2008 sales were to be fleet only, no consumer sales. (an article which I have sadly lost) Finally. I hate those oversize gas guzzlers, they’re a throwback to the dinosaurs.

(with apologies tot he late great photographer W. Eugene Smith for the paraphrase)

If you wait ten minutes it will change

Once more, Summer turns into Winter without a proper phase change. Quantum weather. 90 degrees. Click! 42 degrees. Which sucks, because I haven’t laid in enough winter clothes, but mostly because I Love The Fall.

happy International talk like a Pirate Day

Scientists drug test whole cities

Oregon State University researchers have streamlined a technique to drug test whole cities:

Researchers have figured out how to give an entire community a drug test using just a teaspoon of wastewater from a city’s sewer plant.

The test wouldn’t be used to finger any single person as a drug user. But it would help federal law enforcement and other agencies track the spread of dangerous drugs, like methamphetamines, across the country.

This isn’t rocket science, and everyone from the EPA to the Italians have been doing this for a while. This artcile just indicates how simple it is and how little you need. And how fast the Feds will re allocating assets to bust your ass, not to mention future arguments to get a judge to give up a search warrant –your honor, it’s in the water, it’s got to be there somewhere! Yet another bit of your privacy down the toilet.

(FFEJWORLD is not a lawyer, nor does it play one in cafes-please consult an attorney before you begin using a compost pile or alley as a urinal. We will tell you that all that urine cleaning herbal shit is worthless and ddoesn nothing to breakdown the residue in your system , let alone in the sewer system)

Nature preserves

There is nothing like like wandering around a big city, or even a big pseudo city Like Evanston at 4am and almost walking into a deer. I walked around a corner and almost into it. The deer looked at me for a bit and then clip-clopped across the street, and then meandered down the block and out of sight.

P.E.R.R.O. gallery show

Friday just got even busier. So many choices. P.E.R.R.O. is participating in an environmentally themed art show this Friday at the Polvo gallery in Pilsen.

ENTORNO: GRASS GROWS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE

Opening Reception: Friday, April 28, 2006 from 6pm-10pm
April 28 – May 20, 2006

“ENTORNO: GRASS GROWS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE” explores an united
response to “environment” by re-examining Chicago’s architectural and
physical spaces, public policies, political referendums and urban
culture, moreover it tackles the dynamics of Chicago’s race and class
structures. Artists, community activists and scholars will use
different formats: installation, sculpture, video, photography, mixed
