Peter Bergman, creator of Radio Free Oz and founder of the Firesign Theatre and Procter and Bergman passed recently. And I’ve been completely unable to write about it. The Firesign Theatre were and are a major influence on me (and on you too, but you don’t know it-they didn’t invent surreal catch phrases, but they perfected them, paving the way for kinder gentler surrealists like Steve Martin). I’m going to try to fill this out later, in the mean time here are the last recorded words of Peter Bergman, from his podcast:

Take heart, dear friends. We are passing through the darkening of the light. We’re gonna make it and we’re going to make it together. Don’t get ground down by cynicism.

Don’t let depression darken the glass through which you look. This is a garden we live in. A garden seeded with unconditional love. And the tears of the oppressed, and realthe tears of the frustrated, and the tears of the good will spring those seeds. The flag has been waived. It says occupy. Occupy Wall Street. Occupy the banks. Occupy the nursing homes. Occupy Congress.

Occupy the big law offices. Occupy the lobbyists. Occupy…yourself. Because that’s were it all comes together. I pledge to you, from this moment on, whatever it means, I’m going to occupy myself. I love you. See ya tomorrow

You get used totje strangest things. I worked for a guy who couldnt get to sleep without playing a recording of an elevated train. He grew up next to the El. I also knew a guy who got addicted to cream chipped beef, because it was the first hit meal he had after the battle of the bulge. And then there was the friend who could only sleep on a water bed.

I’m beginning to find the sound of cats wailing at night comforting.
